LESSON 7-3 ⏱ 10 MIN

Eyes and the Brow Ridge — Number 7

The brow ridge is the single most expressive structure on the face. It defines the 7 in the face sequence and is the primary indicator of negative emotion — anger, pain, concentration, grief.

KEY CONCEPTS

  • Eyes sit at the midpoint of the head — one eye-width apart from each other
  • The brow ridge (the 7) arches from inner to outer corner over each eye
  • Inner brows pulled together + downward = furrowed brows = anger/concentration
  • Raised inner brows + downturned mouth = sadness/worry
  • The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eyeball — this shadow is life
  • The "concentration line" between brows = single most powerful expression line

Look closely at a well-drawn eye: the upper eyelid casts a shadow on the upper eyeball. This shadow is what makes eyes look three-dimensional and alive. The iris is partially covered by the upper lid. The pupil is a dark disc within the iris. Get these three elements — lid shadow, partially covered iris, dark pupil — right and your eyes will come alive instantly.

The brow ridge controls emotional read more than any other single structure. A single well-placed vertical line between the eyebrows — the "concentration furrow" — can transform a blank neutral face into a focused, thinking, feeling character. This one mark is more powerful than ten additional details added elsewhere on the face.

TRY THIS — 10 MINUTESDraw the same pair of eyes six times, changing ONLY the brow position: (1) neutral — flat, (2) inner corners raised (sad/worried), (3) inner corners lowered/together (angry/intense), (4) both brows raised high (surprised), (5) one brow up, one down (skeptical), (6) brows close and very low over the eyes (pure rage/determination). The eye shapes themselves stay completely identical.
