KEY CONCEPTS
- Eyes sit at the midpoint of the head — one eye-width apart from each other
- The brow ridge (the 7) arches from inner to outer corner over each eye
- Inner brows pulled together + downward = furrowed brows = anger/concentration
- Raised inner brows + downturned mouth = sadness/worry
- The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eyeball — this shadow is life
- The "concentration line" between brows = single most powerful expression line
Look closely at a well-drawn eye: the upper eyelid casts a shadow on the upper eyeball. This shadow is what makes eyes look three-dimensional and alive. The iris is partially covered by the upper lid. The pupil is a dark disc within the iris. Get these three elements — lid shadow, partially covered iris, dark pupil — right and your eyes will come alive instantly.
The brow ridge controls emotional read more than any other single structure. A single well-placed vertical line between the eyebrows — the "concentration furrow" — can transform a blank neutral face into a focused, thinking, feeling character. This one mark is more powerful than ten additional details added elsewhere on the face.
