LESSON 7-2 ⏱ 10 MIN

The Face Sequence — Building Features in Order

The face is drawn in a specific sequence. Each step prepares the placement for the next. From eye line to hair, every element has its right moment in the sequence.

FACE SEQUENCE:
0 8 7 5 9 2 3 6 4 1

THE SEQUENCE STEP BY STEP

  • 0 — Eye line: the horizontal center of the face. Your first and most important line.
  • 8 — Eye sockets: placed symmetrically on the eye line, one eye-width apart.
  • 7 — Brow ridge: arches over each eye from inner to outer corner.
  • 5 — Nose: midway between eye line and chin.
  • 9 — Lips: the M-shape upper lip (Cupid's bow), the full arc lower lip.
  • 2 — Chin: a defined curve below the lower lip.
  • 3 — Jaw line: from chin up to the ear placement.
  • 6 — Ear: level with the eyes, placed on the jaw line.
  • 4 — Neck: two sternocleidomastoid cylinders connecting head to clavicles.
  • 1 — Hair: drawn last, flows from the cranium outward in response to gravity and motion.

Each step in the sequence prepares the placement for the next. You cannot correctly place the nose without the eye line. You cannot correctly place the mouth without the nose. The jaw cannot be correctly drawn without the ear placement. This is not arbitrary — it is a logical dependency chain.

TRY THIS — 10 MINUTESDraw the same face three times using the full sequence 0→8→7→5→9→2→3→6→4→1: (1) face looking straight ahead, (2) face tilted slightly down, (3) face turned three-quarters to the right. Notice how the sequence adapts naturally to every angle without any modification to its order. The sequence is universal.
